Sopdet’s Arc

Jaxon’s head pounded with the chorus of the Nommo chanting their haunting tune. Despite their reassurance that he told the truth, the repetitive bellowing overwhelmed him.

With the entire colony in disarray, Jaxon’s mind raced. What were the Nommo pointing toward? Who was the shadowy figure with dark wings in his dream? Why did they mention the Chronomeld Stone and the Quantum Dreamweaver?

Voss hurried to Jaxon’s side. “Jaxon, what’s happening? Why are they blaming you for this?” He raised his voice to overcome the surrounding noise.

The Nommo were still chanting Jaxon’s innocence. “He tells the truth. He tells the truth.”

The cat-woman crouched on the gravelly mud by the water’s edge, staring up at him.

Voss’s eyes widened as he took in the chaotic scene. “We need to stop this! Find out what’s causing this mayhem.”

Jaxon grabbed Voss’s arm. “The Nommo are certain I’m tied to whatever’s happening. They mentioned a man with dark wings. I’ve dreamt of him.”

“A dream? What did you see?”

Jaxon recounted the shadowy figure and the demands for the Chronomeld Stone and the Quantum Dreamweaver.

The Serefis woman pounced. Her claws gripped his T-shirt, but they didn’t penetrate the material. “They’re insisting you leave. Hey, you wished we would all be safe forever. Let’s go.”

“But they’re shouting that I’m telling the truth.” Jaxon winced at the terrible noise.

The cat-woman darted towards the elderly Nommos again before returning to the stunned Jaxon and Voss.

“It’s hurting my head.” Voss squeezed his palms over his ears.

“If you leave Microxus, Captain Orion, they will stop,” she said.

“Why?” Jaxon rubbed the sweat off his forehead.

“Because the shadow-man does not believe you. Soon, he’ll torment the entire colony.”

“What will he do?” Voss said.

“Make everyone mad. It’s what the Nommo see. Without them, you would never know.”

Voss frowned. “Can you trust them?”

Jaxon gave him and the cat-woman unwavering eye contact. “Oh, yes. If it wasn’t for them, I would never have known that Korrigan had escaped to Microxus and taken Kaida with him.”

“That Nommos wants to go, too.”

“Huh?”

“He’s a pilot.”

“And you?”

“I’ve already called a Sopdet Ark, which is stationed in the Triangulum Galaxy.”

“Sorry,” Jaxon said. “What arc?”

“A Sirius mothership,” she said. “Don’t take the Manticore. You’ll need the three psychic Nommo on that Sopdet's Arc to help. We must go now.”

The cat-woman’s urgent plea echoed in his ears amidst the screaming Nommo and panicking colonists.

Voss placed a firm hand on Jaxon’s shoulder. “Go, Jaxon. We will manage here. Your friends need you.”

The sudden appearance of an enormous moon-like mothership lit up the gardens. It reflected lights from the fires and made the ground shake, causing gasps and terror.

The cat-woman, a blur of agility and strength, swiftly hoisted the elderly Nommos into her arms. “Hurry, Captain Orion! We have to leave now!”

Jaxon’s gaze flickered from the gigantic mothership above to Voss, Mark, David, and Chruse. He desperately wanted to inform his girlfriends. “Where are Anika and Sia?”

“Probably trying to calm the children somewhere.” Mark shrugged from his hoverchair, his leg-stump jutting out.

Voss nodded with urgency. “We’ll tell them.
